Out to Alarm Texas Campaign Marks 20 Years, Surpasses 30,000 Smoke Alarms Distributed

ICT and local State Farm agents distributed over 1,700 smoke alarms to local fire departments

The Insurance Council of Texas (ICT) is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its Out to Alarm Texas campaign with a record-breaking distribution of smoke alarms, surpassing 30,000 alarms delivered to Texas residents since the program's launch in 2005.

In May 2025, thanks to a generous grant from State Farm Insurance, ICT, local State Farm agents and local fire departments distributed over 1,700 smoke alarms, the largest distribution in the program’s history.

The Out to Alarm Texas initiative was created to reduce fire-related deaths and injuries by providing working smoke alarms for Texans in need. Since its inception, the program has grown from a pilot partnership with the Texas State Fire Marshal’s Office to a statewide effort involving more than 90 local fire departments.

“For 20 years, this program has helped save lives, prevent tragedies and save homes in across Texas,” said Rich Johnson, director of communications and public affairs for the Insurance Council of Texas. “Passing the 30,000-alarm milestone is more than just a number, it’s a testament to the dedicated fire departments and first responders who are on the frontlines helping communities who make this work possible.”

The need for working smoke alarms remains urgent. According to the National Fire Protection Association’s 2023 Fire Loss in the United States report, nearly three out of five home fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms or alarms that failed to operate. Homes with working smoke alarms have a 55 percent lower risk of fire-related death.

“State Farm is proud to support this important initiative to improve fire safety and awareness,” said Felicia Hutchins, Corporate Responsibility with State Farm Insurance. “We know working smoke alarms can save lives, and we're honored to partner with ICT and fire departments to help protect families and communities throughout Texas.”
