Insurance Council of Texas Urges Consumers to Prepare for Spring Storms
Texas is no stranger to severe spring storms, and with multiple rounds of hail, heavy winds, and heavy rains already reported this year, the Insurance Council of Texas (ICT) is urging residents to take proactive steps to protect their property and understand their insurance coverage before the next storm strikes.
The Texas spring storm season, which typically runs from March through May, brings an increased risk of hail, wind, tornadoes, and flooding. These storms can develop quickly and cause significant damage, making it crucial for Texans to stay informed and prepared.
How to Prepare for Severe Storms
1. Review Your Insurance Coverage
Understanding what your policy covers before a storm hits can help prevent unexpected financial burdens. Consumers should check their policies to ensure they have adequate coverage, including dwelling protection and comprehensive coverage on automobiles.
- Wind and hail damage are typically covered under standard homeowners insurance policies, but flood damage requires a separate flood insurance policy.
- Vehicle damage caused by hail, wind, or falling debris is only covered if you have comprehensive auto insurance.
2. Protect Your Property
- Secure outdoor furniture, grills, and decorations that could become projectiles in high winds.
- Trim trees and remove weak branches that could fall and damage property or automobiles.
- Inspect roofs and windows for leaks or weak spots that could worsen during a storm.
3. Prepare Your Vehicles
- Move cars into a garage or covered location if possible.
- Fill your gas tank in case of power outages or the need to evacuate.
4. Create a Home Inventory
- Walk through your home and document your belongings by taking photos or videos.
- Make a list of valuable items such as electronics, jewelry, and artwork.
- Store the inventory in a safe place, such as the cloud or email it to yourself for easy access after a storm.
5. Sign Up for Weather Alerts
- Stay informed by following local news stations or the National Weather Service.
- Have a reliable method for receiving alerts, such as a weather radio or notifications on your mobile phone.
- Plan an evacuation route if severe weather threatens your area.
6. Create an Emergency Kit
Being prepared for power outages and emergency situations can make a significant difference in safety and comfort. A basic emergency kit should include:
- Enough water for several days (one gallon per person per day).
- Non-perishable food and necessary medications.
- A battery-powered radio, flashlight, and extra batteries.
- A first aid kit and cell phone chargers.
- Copies of important documents, including insurance policies.
- Pet supplies, cash, and any other necessary items.

Stay Safe and Be Prepared
ICT encourages all Texans to take steps now to prepare for severe weather before storms arrive. “Planning ahead can make all the difference when it comes to protecting your home, vehicle, and loved ones,” said [ICT Representative’s Name]. “Review your insurance policies, secure your property, and stay informed to ensure you’re ready for whatever this storm season brings.”
