INSURANCE COUNCIL OF TEXAS, STATE FARM, AND LOCAL FIRE DEPARTMENTS JOIN FORCES TO ENHANCE FIRE SAFETY ACROSS TEXAS
Austin, TX - Oct. 10, 2023 - The Insurance Council of Texas (ICT), State Farm, and local fire departments have come together to distribute free smoke detectors to households in need across Texas in collaboration for community safety. This initiative underscores their shared commitment to reducing the risk of fire-related tragedies and protecting the lives and property of Texas residents.
Free smoke detectors were distributed and installed in 30 cities with local fire departments. Fire education materials were also provided to help the public understand the fire hazards, especially as the holiday season nears.
“Smoke detectors are a critical component of early fire detection and ensuring that every home has access to these devices is a shared priority,” said Rich Johnson, Director of Communication and Public Affairs at ICT. “The partnership marks a significant milestone in our combined efforts to promote fire safety in communities throughout the state.”
The early warning smoke detectors allow occupants precious minutes to evacuate safely in the event of a fire. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), three out of five home fire deaths result from fires in properties without working smoke alarms. Widespread use of smoke detectors protects individuals and families and contributes to overall community safety.
"At State Farm, our commitment to community safety goes beyond insurance coverage,” said Felicia Hutchins, Corporate Responsibility, State Farm. "We are proud to support initiatives that promote fire safety and distribute smoke detectors to those who may not have easy access. We aim to strengthen communities by reducing the risk of fire-related incidents and enhancing our policyholders and neighbors' overall safety and well-being."
The NFPA underscores the life-saving potential of smoke detectors, noting that having working smoke alarms can reduce the risk of death in a home fire by half. As such, ensuring that smoke detectors are installed and adequately maintained in homes and businesses should be a top priority for all Texans.
ICT Recommend all Texans:
Regularly test your smoke detectors to ensure they are functioning correctly.
Change the batteries at least once a year and consider using long-life lithium batteries.
Place detectors in key areas, such as bedrooms, hallways, and the kitchen.
